CHAMBERS
Family Bible Notes:
It is mentioned in notes that kinship is to Sir Walter Raleigh;
I haven't found far enough for the relationship as yet.
"Chap" Chambers, born xxxxx xx, xxxx
He married Malissa(millisie, melissa) Dial, born xxxxx xx, xxxx.
She was 1/4 cherokee and his second cousin. He was a farmer by trade
and lived in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Apparently, both he and his father
fought in the Civil War for the North and one of them was killed.
They had x children:
- Mary Susan, born May 18, 1867,
in Murray County, Georgia. She died March 8, 1960 and is buried
at Grove Hill Cemetary, Dallas, Texas.
- Cass, born xx-xx-xxxx in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
*I'm guessing, but I think that it was the father and not the son
as my ggmother was born after the war ended by 2 years.
Having the poor to little info above, I turned to the Census...
Here is Census data:
Per the 1880 Murray County, GA census:
John C. age 33 born GA
Malicey age 36 born GA
Children in household:
Laura A. CHAMBERS
Sarah E. CHAMBERS
Martha CHAMBERS
Sausan CHAMBERS age 13 born GA (my gmother)
William CHAMBERS
Oma J. CHAMBERS
Luiza CHAMBERS
Thomas CHAMBERS
Cas A. CHAMBERS age 1 born GA (brother mentioned)
Also living with the family was a grandson
Levi HEDRICK age 1
*this fits down to gran's mention of a Hedrick niece--Ella Hedrick McNabb.
Also in Murray county 1880 census,
are the mother and brothers of John C.
Roswell, James J. and mother, Sousan A.
*small spelling and name errors between 1870-1880 census'
In Murray County 1870 census, there is a another brother
Roswell, James J., Harrison, and John C.
Listed in John C. Household
(all born Georgia)
Chambers, John C.
Elizabeth(Woodey) Wife age 27 (evidently, first wife)
Children in household:
Sarah A. (this would be Laura A.)
Sarah E.
Martha
Susan A. Age 3 (my gmother born 1867)
John W. (this would be William probably)
Also in household
Ray, Joseph 18 M W Farm laborer TN(can't write)
Curd, Betsy 16 F W Farm laborer GA(can't read/write)
*problem--Mary Susan, my gmother, would be from this marriage
to Elizabeth and not from Malicey...
NOTES:
I found nothing on the 1860 census for Lumpkin, Murray, or Springplace, GA
at all... If gran was correct and father and son(s) fought and/or
died during the war for the North, then this might be the time
that they moved to avoid it or fight in it, and might explain why
mother Susan is living with son, Rosswell, as of the 1870 census...
Since GA suceeded and towed the Confederate line and was burned and
pillaged, I think that I will look at North Carolina/Tennessee for info...
Father of John C.
Calvin J. Chambers, born 1804-1809
I find him in the 1850 census.
